Planning + Feasibility

Form + Place is currently working with Specialized Housing Inc. to renovate two of their longest-tenured congregate living homes. At the Winchester Street residence, a new one-bedroom staff apartment is being added at the basement level to allow for “live-in” support for the residents as they age. A clever design approach that includes excavating to create a sunken entry terrace, combined with new areaways on two sides of the house, will bring a generous amount of light into this basement level flat. In SHI’s original house on Washington Street, the two lowest levels of the house are being completely reconceived to move common areas for use by the residents – kitchen, dining and living space – to the first-floor level, making them more accessible. This, in turn, is creating the opportunity for two “live-in” staff apartments with direct access, to be integrated at the lower patio level. In addition, a new rear entry and covered exterior stair will provide residents with direct access to their existing underutilized outdoor amenity space.
